The Don Restaurant

The Don Restaurant, London

The Don in question is George Sandeman, a Scotsman who in 1798 took over these premises for his port, sherry and wine emporium. Serious imbibing is still central to the appeal of this vintage City aristocrat, and the list pays homage to the site’s heritage as well as highlighting wines from the owners’ Trinity Hill vineyard in New Zealand. Locals adore everything about The Don, from its “discreet” courtyard location to its uniquely cosseting atmosphere – perfect for long business lunches.

Impeccable European flavours dominate the menu, which roams its way from ravioli of snails or baked scallops en croûte with vanilla butter to roast cod with lyonnaise onions or perhaps saddle
of hare with jugged leg, celeriac purée and
bitter chocolate sauce. Fans also drool over the “huge, juicy and gorgeous” chateaubriand, likewise the warm ginger fondant with clotted cream. One regular sums it up: “From the corner wine cellar to the cheese trolley, this is the
way the world should be.” - Square Meal
